About The HKMB-HUB Hockey Challenge For Charity

In 2006, after some of my colleagues in the Insurance Industry chose to pit their hockey skills against one another for fun, HKMB organized their first Hockey Challenge for Charity game. With the support of the Insurance Industry, we were able to lay the foundation for what some consider to be the premier Insurance Hockey event in the City of Toronto!

We had a lot of fun at that event, so much so in fact that when the word spread, my sponsoring companies grew to 11 firms and I had a list of close to 100 players interested in being a part of this worthy event! So in 2007, we concluded that we would try to give more than we received. Last year, our humble event, held at the RICOH Coliseum, rose over $2,000 in support of the United Way of Greater Toronto. The event exceeded all expectations; we had prizes and a reception that followed for the players and the spectators; not to mention some great prizes donated on behalf of MLSE themselves! Some of our first sponsors were C.N.A., Crawford Adjusters, ING, Royal and SunAlliance, GCNA, Aviva, AIG, Chubb, Discount Car & Truck and HKMB.

Already this year we have surpassed our goal of sponsorship and corporate donations. We have taken our game to the next level!! We have decided to contribute all proceeds to two great causes.

In 2006, HKMB colleagues helped to raise about $33,000 exceeding our goal of $25,000. Last year we had an exceptional campaign, nearly doubling our collective efforts and raising over $60,000 in support of the United Way of Greater Toronto. This was achieved through pledging, participating in the CN Tower Climb, exhibiting our culinary skills for the bake sale, amongst our many game activities (Mini Putt) and contests (Best Legs). “HKMB’s generous spirit shone like a beacon”. Already we have begun this year’s campaign on a good note by partnering with them once again for our Third Annual Hockey Challenge, as we want to continue to be part of their amazing work helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

We have also joined forces with Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC) to be a part of our event. Cancer, in its various forms, has touched all of lives in one way or another and we want to help in their initiative to “mobilize for a cure”.

Keep an eye out for a following write-up in the next issue of Canadian Underwriter and Claims Canada magazines.
